Best Luggage for Japan 2026: 5 Suitcases Under the Shinkansen Limit

Japan’s bullet trains are the easiest way to link Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka, and they come with a luggage rule many visitors discover only on the platform. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, a bag whose three sides add up to more than 160 cm (63 inches) needs a reserved “seat with an oversized baggage area”. Winter makes it bite: bulky layers push people toward 28- and 29-inch suitcases that can land just over the line.

The Shinkansen 160 cm rule in one minute

JR Central, JR West and JR Kyushu sort luggage by the sum of its three sides:

Board with an oversized bag and no reservation, and JR charges a ¥1,000 fee (tax included); the reservation itself costs nothing extra. JR notes that 160 cm is close to the size at which international flights start charging oversize fees (it varies by airline); Travelpro puts the standard checked-bag limit on most airlines at 62 linear inches (158 cm), and a bag within it clears the Shinkansen rule too.

Where it applies: only on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen (Tokyo – Shin-Osaka – Hakata – Kagoshima-Chuo, and Takeo-Onsen – Nagasaki). JR East says no luggage reservations are needed on the Tohoku, Hokkaido, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen.

How to choose luggage for a Japan trip

1. Keep the total at or under 160 cm, wheels included

JR doesn’t say how to treat wheels and handles, so measure the whole bag. Travelpro and ACE (Proteca’s maker) publish sizes that include wheels and handles, and Samsonite Japan says its heights include the wheels. Medium 24–26-inch bags usually sit under the line; large 28–29-inch bags are where travelers get caught:

2. Choose a carry-on that fits domestic flights

Flying Tokyo to Sapporo for the snow? JAL allows one carry-on of up to 55 × 40 × 25 cm and 115 cm in total, with a 10 kg limit, on planes with 100 or more seats, and refuses bags over the total even if each side fits. Low-cost Peach allows two items of up to 115 cm each (wheels and handles included) and 7 kg together. A US-size carry-on such as Travelpro’s Maxlite 5 Compact (22 × 14 × 9 inches, about 56 cm tall) is about a centimeter taller than JAL’s 55 cm.

3. Count kilograms, not just liters

Rail travel means stairs, transfers and lifting bags onto racks. The bags here weigh 2.1–5.1 kg empty; under the 50 lb (about 23 kg) cap Travelpro cites for most US airlines, a 3.1 kg case leaves about 19.6 kg for your things.

4. Hardside or softside?

Softside bags are light and flexible, and Travelpro’s coated polyester resists water and stains. Hardside protects fragile souvenirs: Samsonite says its Curv shell has outstanding impact performance “especially at low temperatures”, and Travelpro’s polycarbonate is built to flex on impact.

5. Think about small rooms and crowded platforms

ACE designed Proteca’s new 360G5 around compact business hotels, private rentals and crowded stations: it opens vertically or horizontally to fit the space you have. A wheel lock keeps a bag still on a moving train, as JR asks of stored bags.

1. Travelpro Maxlite 5 Medium Check-In Spinner — best overall

Travelpro’s lightweight Maxlite 5 packs 91 liters into its 25-inch Medium Check-In Spinner, yet it weighs 6.8 lb (3.1 kg). With wheels and handles it measures 27 × 18.5 × 11.5 inches: about 145 cm, or about 150 cm with the 2-inch expander open, well under JR’s line.

It has four spinner wheels, coated polyester and a lifetime limited warranty, and costs $195 at Travelpro’s store. It is listed on Amazon.com in several colors; in Japan it shows up only through import sellers, from about ¥49,000 on kakaku.com, so buy before you fly.

2. Samsonite C-Lite Spinner 75 cm — big and light, still under 160 cm

This is nearly as big as the rule allows: Samsonite lists the C-Lite Spinner 75 at 75 × 51 × 31 cm, 157 cm in total, with 94 liters for just 2.8 kg, the lightest checked bag here. The shell is Curv, a woven polypropylene, and the bag carries a limited 10-year global warranty.

The margin is only 3 cm, so don’t size up to the 81 cm. Prices vary widely: ¥94,600 at Samsonite Japan and Bic Camera, £439 at Samsonite UK, while kakaku.com’s cheapest offers (about ¥47,380) are parallel imports (並行輸入品). If the warranty matters, buy from an authorized seller and keep the receipt. It is listed on Amazon.com too; check the seller.

3. Travelpro Maxlite Air V2 Medium — best-value hardside

Travelpro’s hardside option costs the same $195: a crack-resistant polycarbonate shell, eight spinner wheels, a built-in TSA lock and two zippered dividers. With wheels it measures 27.5 × 17.5 × 11 inches, about 142 cm (147 cm expanded), with 76 liters inside.

The trade-off is 9.4 lb (4.3 kg), 1.2 kg more than the Maxlite 5 for 15 fewer liters. On Amazon.com, listings for the original Maxlite Air also appear, so look for “V2”.

4. Samsonite C-Lite Spinner 55 cm expandable — best carry-on for domestic flights

The same Curv shell makes a 2.1 kg carry-on: 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 36 liters (42 L expanded). Closed, it matches JAL’s 55 × 40 × 25 cm, 115 cm limit and leaves 7.9 kg of the 10 kg allowance. Expanded to 23 cm deep it totals 118 cm, over JAL’s limit, so keep it zipped on domestic flights.

Samsonite Japan and Bic Camera list it at ¥83,600; kakaku.com’s cheapest offer (about ¥55,000) is a parallel import; Samsonite UK’s list price is £379.

5. Proteca 360G5 — made in Japan, opens two ways

Proteca is ACE’s made-in-Japan suitcase brand, and the 360G5 went on sale from 8 August 2026. Built at ACE’s Akabira factory in Hokkaido, it opens vertically or horizontally to suit the space, has a new top zip for reaching things while it stands, and adds double casters to Proteca’s quiet Silent Caster wheels and patented Magic Stop wheel lock.

The 71-liter size (02623) is 66 × 48 × 27 cm, 141 cm, 4.2 kg; the 105-liter version is 158 cm, and the 38-liter carry-on (54 × 36 × 25 cm) fits JAL’s limit. It is the priciest bag here, but Premium Care repairs damage free for three years, airline damage included (not for outlet, parallel-import or sale purchases). It is sold at ACE’s shops, department stores and ACE’s official online stores, including on Rakuten and Yahoo! Shopping; we found no Amazon Japan listing yet.

Booking, storage and other tips

How to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area

These are last-row seats in some reserved cars; your bag goes behind them, in a space shared by that row. Book at JR ticket machines, at a ticket office or on JR’s online reservation sites for these lines; Japan Rail Pass holders can book them too. They cost the same as a normal reserved seat, but a 16-car Nozomi has only 57 of them. Tickets go on sale a month ahead, so book early for the New Year holidays.

No reservation? Use deck storage

Bags up to 160 cm that are too heavy for the rack can go in deck storage on some Tokaido and Sanyo trains. Since July 2025, JR has also trialed no-reservation storage in the former oversized baggage compartments of 16-car trains, but not for bags over 160 cm. Deck storage can be locked with a cable secured by tapping a transport IC card, so keep your Suica card or mobile Suica handy (JR notes some cards and phones don’t work).

Skis, snowboards and strollers

JR’s oversized rule does not apply to sports equipment, musical instruments or strollers, so a ski or snowboard bag needs no special reservation; use the racks and deck storage. To use the space behind the last row, though, you must reserve that seat.

When to buy

In the US, Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days sale runs October 6–7, 2026, for Prime members. Amazon Japan holds its own Prime-member sale on October 16–19, with a pre-sale from October 13. Neither announcement names any luggage deals.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to reserve a seat for my suitcase on the Shinkansen?

Only if its three sides add up to more than 160 cm and you ride the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu or Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. The reservation costs nothing extra; without one, JR charges a ¥1,000 fee. Bags over 250 cm are not allowed.

Does the 160 cm limit include wheels and handles?
