Many visitors want to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan. But there is a catch. The console in most Japanese shops is a Japan-only model. Its menus are in Japanese only. It also links only to a Nintendo Account set to Japan.
This guide explains the two models, the 2026 prices and the bundles. It shows where to buy and how the new tax-free refund system from 1 November 2026 works. We also cover accessories, power plugs, the warranty and second-hand units. We checked Nintendo’s official pages and prices on 30 October 2026.
📌 What you will learn
In a hurry? Shops in Japan sell the Japan-only Switch 2 (¥59,980). It works only in Japanese and only with a Japan-region Nintendo Account. If you want English or another language, buy the multilingual model (¥69,980). It is sold only in the official Nintendo Store. Add a microSD Express card if you need more space. Old microSD cards do not work. The warranty does not cover use outside Japan.

Japan-only or multilingual: which model?
Nintendo sells two versions of the Switch 2 in Japan. The box contents are the same. The difference is language, account region and where you can buy it.
Nintendo Switch 2 日本語・国内専用 (Japanese-Language System, Japan only)
This is the model in electronics shops and game shops all over Japan. The box says 日本語・国内専用. Nintendo’s official English text says:
“The Japanese-Language System … is designed for use in Japan only. Only Japanese is available as the system language, and only Nintendo Accounts with the country/region set to Japan can be linked to this system.”
Nintendo also says you can buy only Japan-region software in the Nintendo eShop on this model. Games use the same language as the console, so usually Japanese. Some games let you change their language separately.
Without a linked Nintendo Account, you mainly lose GameChat, virtual game cards, Nintendo Switch Online, the Nintendo Switch App, the eShop, game news and friends. So the account rule matters a lot.
| Japanese name | Nintendo Switch 2(日本語・国内専用) |
|---|---|
| Model (価格.com) | BEE-S-KB6CA |
| Official price | ¥59,980 (since 25 May 2026) |

| Where sold | Game shops across Japan, plus the Nintendo Store |
| Best for | Japanese readers, or people who live in Japan with a Japan-region account |
Nintendo Switch 2 多言語対応 (Multi-Language System)
This model lets you choose from 16 languages, including Japanese. They are English (UK/Australia and US), French (France and Canada), German, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Italian, Dutch, Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil), Russian, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified) and Korean. It links with Nintendo Accounts from any country or region.
It costs ¥69,980, which is ¥10,000 more. Nintendo says: “Nintendo Storeのみの販売となります”. That means it is sold only in Nintendo’s official online shop. You will not find it at Bic Camera or Yodobashi. Nintendo’s own advice is simple: if you want a language other than Japanese, consider the multilingual model. See the Nintendo Store (Japan).
| 日本語・国内専用 (Japan-only) | 多言語対応 (Multilingual) | |
|---|---|---|
| Official price | ¥59,980 | ¥69,980 |

Prices in 2026 and the bundles
The price went up on 25 May 2026
Nintendo announced a price change on 8 May 2026. From 25 May 2026, the Japan-only Switch 2 went from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980. Nintendo named changes in market conditions as the reason. The multilingual model did not change. It is still ¥69,980.
Other prices also rose. The original Switch models went up on the same day. The Nintendo Switch Online 12-month individual plan went from ¥2,400 to ¥3,000 on 1 July 2026.
Shops can sell below the official price. On 30 October 2026, the lowest Japan-only price on 価格.com was ¥53,900.

Where to buy, and tax-free shopping from 1 November 2026
Nintendo Store (official online shop)
The Nintendo Store is the only place to buy the multilingual model. You need a Nintendo Account. In June 2026, Nintendo stopped multilingual sales for a short time. It said it had found several orders that looked like bulk buying. Sales then restarted with a rule: one per account, and the account had to show 50+ hours of Nintendo Switch play as of 31 May 2026. The Japan-only model had no such rule.
⚠️ Not confirmed
- We could not confirm if the 50-hour rule still applies on 30 October 2026
- We could not confirm if the Nintendo Store ships outside Japan or accepts foreign cards
- Check the Nintendo Store page before you plan your trip
Electronics shops and game shops
Big shops such as Bic Camera and Yodobashi sell the Japan-only model and the bundles. In 2025, some shops sold the Switch 2 by lottery (抽選). We could not confirm each shop’s current rules. 価格.com listed 22 shops for the Japan-only model on 30 October 2026. Ask staff, or check the shop’s website.
The new tax-free system from 1 November 2026
Japan’s tax-free system changes on 1 November 2026. It becomes a refund system. You pay the full price with tax in the shop. When you leave Japan, customs checks that the goods are leaving. Then the shop, or its refund provider, pays the tax back.
✅ Tax-free checklist for a Switch 2
- Spend at least ¥5,000 (before tax) in one shop on one day
- Bring your passport when you buy
- Leave Japan and see customs within 90 days of purchase
- See customs before you check in your bags. Carry the console in your hand luggage
- Keep every item on that receipt. If one item is missing, no item on that record is tax-free
- Ask the shop how and when it pays the refund. Methods and fees can differ
Under the old system, consoles were “general goods” and cosmetics or food were “consumables”. From 1 November 2026, this split is abolished. Special sealed bags are also gone. At some major airports, you can do the procedure with Visit Japan Web.
How much? Japan’s consumption tax is 10%. On a ¥59,980 console, the tax part is about ¥5,452. Your refund can be smaller if a fee is charged.
A news site, HK01, reported that Bic Camera and Yodobashi charge no refund fee and EDION charges ¥210. We could not confirm this on the shops’ own pages. Read more in our Japan tax-free shopping guide.
Accessories and a first game
The console has 256GB of storage. That may fill up fast with download games. Here are the most useful extras, with official and 価格.com prices.
microSD Express card: the only card that works
Nintendo says: “Nintendo Switch 2 で使えるSDカードは「microSD Expressカード」のみです.” That means only microSD Express cards work, up to 2TB. A normal microSD card from your old Switch cannot save or load games on the Switch 2. It can only copy old screenshots and videos. Look for the “EX” mark on the package. The first time you use a card, the console needs a system update over the internet.
| Licensed card | Model | Released | 価格.com from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung microSD Express 256GB for Nintendo Switch 2 | BEE-A-SD01B | Jun 2025 | ¥6,980 |
| SanDisk microSD Express 256GB for Nintendo Switch 2 | BEE-A-SD01A | Jun 2025 | ¥9,165 |
| SanDisk microSD Express 512GB for Nintendo Switch 2 | BEE-A-SD02C | Oct 2026 | ¥25,798 |
※ Nintendo-licensed cards listed on Nintendo Japan’s microSD Express page. Prices: 価格.com, 30 October 2026.
Nintendo Switch 2 Proコントローラー (Pro Controller)
A wireless controller for TV mode and long sessions. It has a C button for GameChat, two extra GL/GR buttons you can assign, a headphone jack and HD Rumble 2. A USB charging cable is included.
| Japanese name | Nintendo Switch 2 Proコントローラー |
|---|---|
| Model | BEE-A-FSSKA |
| Official price | ¥9,980 |
| Shop price | from ¥9,020 (価格.com) |
| Best for | TV play, long sessions |
Nintendo Switch 2 キャリングケース (Carrying Case)
Useful for the flight home. The set includes a case, a screen protector and a cleaning cloth. It holds 6 game cards and 2 Joy-Con 2 straps. The official price is ¥2,980. For bigger needs, the オールインボックス (¥9,980) holds the console, dock and cables.
A first game: マリオカート ワールド (Mario Kart World)
The Mario Kart World console set has ended, so buy the game separately, or choose it in the 選べるソフト セット. The package version costs ¥9,980 officially, from ¥8,145 on 価格.com. Other examples: ドンキーコング バナンザ from ¥7,300 and スプラトゥーン レイダース from ¥5,576.
Can I use my old Switch accessories?
| Old Switch item | On Switch 2? |
|---|---|
| Pro Controller | Yes, wireless |
| Joy-Con | Yes, wireless. They cannot charge on the Switch 2 |
| AC adapter | Charges, but not enough power for TV mode |
| Dock | No |
| HDMI cable from the Switch box | Not supported |
| Normal microSD card | No (only for copying old screenshots/videos) |
※ From Nintendo Japan’s compatibility page.
Other official prices: Joy-Con 2 pair ¥9,980, Joy-Con 2 charging grip ¥3,980, dock set ¥14,980, camera ¥5,980, AC adapter ¥3,980.
Using it outside Japan: power, warranty, game cards, second-hand
Power: 100–240V, but a Japanese plug
The AC adapter input is AC 100V–240V, 50/60Hz. So the voltage is fine in most countries. But the plug is the Japanese Type A (two flat pins). You may need a plug adapter. Nintendo says it has not tested travel plug adapters, and does not guarantee stable or safe operation with them.
Warranty: Japan only
The warranty is one year from first setup (or from the purchase date). This applies to both models. Nintendo says it does not cover faults or damage from use outside Japan. Repaired items are only sent back to addresses in Japan. Keep your receipt, because single accessories need proof of purchase for repair.
Game cards
Nintendo does not say that Switch 2 game cards are region-free. Its wording is that package games sold outside Japan are not guaranteed to work on either Japanese model. Also, on the Japan-only console, games usually run in Japanese. Check the language before you buy a game.
Wi-Fi rules abroad
Nintendo warns that wireless use in a region that does not meet that region’s requirements may break local laws. Check your country’s rules.
Second-hand and fake goods
⚠️ Before you buy used or cheap
- A used or transferred console (中古品) gets paid repairs only, even within one year
- If a console was opened or modified (including software), Nintendo refuses repair
- Damage caused by accessories that are not Nintendo or licensed products is a paid repair
- Licensed accessories show a license mark (ライセンス商品マーク) on the package
- A Japan-only console from a flea market still has all Japan-only limits
- Buy from known shops and keep the receipt
Frequently asked questions
Can I set the Japan-only Switch 2 to English?

The adapter accepts 100–240V, 50/60Hz. But the plug is the Japanese Type A. Nintendo has not tested plug adapters and does not guarantee them.
Is the warranty valid outside Japan?

Can I buy a Switch 2 tax-free?
Yes, if you are an eligible visitor and spend at least ¥5,000 (before tax) in one shop. From 1 November 2026, you pay tax first. You get it back after customs checks the goods at departure, within 90 days and before you check in your bags.
Can I use my old microSD card?
