Japanese hand tools worth a mention
It would be strange to write about Japanese tools and stop at the ones with motors. Japan’s hand tool tradition is older, deeper and โ for a certain kind of buyer โ more transformative than anything cordless. Three categories are worth knowing about even if you never intend to become a woodworker.
Pull saws โ Gyokucho and Z-saw
The Japanese nokogiri cuts on the pull stroke. This is not a stylistic difference; it is a structural one. A saw pushed through wood has its blade in compression, and a thin blade in compression buckles, so Western saws must be thick enough to resist that โ which means they remove a lot of material and require a lot of force. A saw pulled through wood has its blade in tension, and tension does not buckle, so the blade can be extraordinarily thin. The result is a saw that cuts faster, with less effort, leaving a narrower kerf and a cleaner surface than any Western handsaw.
Two makers dominate the accessible end of the market. Gyokucho (sold internationally as Razorsaw) and Z-saw both make replaceable-blade saws with induction-hardened impulse teeth โ the teeth are hardened so effectively that they cannot practically be resharpened, so instead you replace the blade for a fraction of the cost of a new saw. Purists prefer traditional resharpenable saws; everyone else should buy a replaceable-blade saw and never think about sharpening again.
Two blade patterns cover almost everything. The ryoba is double-edged, with rip teeth on one side and crosscut teeth on the other โ one saw, both cuts, and it is the general-purpose Japanese saw. The dozuki has a stiffened spine along the back and very fine teeth, and it is the joinery saw: dovetails, tenon shoulders, anything where the cut must be dead straight and the surface must not need cleaning up. A 240mm ryoba and a 180mm dozuki will handle nearly all hand-cut joinery a hobbyist attempts, and together they cost less than one mid-range Western backsaw.
Chisels โ nomi
Japanese chisels (nomi) are laminated: a thin layer of very hard, high-carbon steel forge-welded to a softer iron or mild steel body. The hard layer takes and holds an edge at a hardness a monolithic Western chisel cannot survive at, because at that hardness a whole chisel would be brittle enough to shatter. The soft backing absorbs shock and makes the tool tough. It is the same construction logic as a Japanese kitchen knife or a katana, applied to a woodworking tool.
The back of a Japanese chisel is hollow-ground โ a shallow concave ura โ which means you are only ever flattening a narrow rim of very hard steel rather than the whole face. Flattening the back of a Western chisel on stones is a miserable rite of passage; on a Japanese chisel it takes minutes. The trade-off is that the hollow is finite: over decades of sharpening you eventually grind past it, and the chisel needs the back tapped out by a skilled hand to restore it. That is a problem for the next generation, not for you.
The practical advice: buy fewer, better chisels. A set of three oire nomi (bench chisels) in something like 6mm, 12mm and 24mm covers the vast majority of work. Japanese chisels are hooped at the handle end for striking with a steel hammer, and the hoop must be seated correctly before first use โ this is worth reading about before you hit anything.
Squares and measuring โ Shinwa
Shinwa Sokutei is the name on most of the measuring tools in a Japanese workshop. Their sashigane โ the flat L-shaped carpenter’s square, made to JIS standards in stainless steel โ is a genuinely different tool from a Western try square. It is flat rather than having a thick stock, so it lies against the work and can be used to mark around corners and along curved surfaces. Many are graduated with a circumference scale on one edge, where the markings are spaced at pi times the normal unit, so you can lay the square across a round log and read its diameter directly. Others carry a square-root scale used in traditional joinery layout.
These are cheap tools โ often under twenty dollars โ that are more accurate than what most workshops own, and they are the single easiest upgrade to the quality of your work. Shinwa also makes marking gauges, protractors, combination squares and centre finders to the same standard. If you buy nothing else Japanese, buy a sashigane.
Voltage, plugs and warranty when importing
This is the section that saves you money, or at least saves you from destroying a tool in the first ten seconds of owning it.
The 100V problem, stated plainly
Japan is 100V, 50Hz in the east and 60Hz in the west. The plug is Type A โ the two flat parallel pins familiar from North America โ which is precisely the trap, because a Japanese plug fits a North American socket perfectly while delivering the wrong voltage to a tool that expects 100V. Nothing physically prevents you from plugging a Japanese corded tool into a 120V American outlet, and this is why people do it.
Running a 100V tool on 120V is a 20% overvoltage. A universal motor will spin roughly 20% faster and draw more current, the windings will run hotter than specified, and insulation life falls with temperature on a steep curve. Some tools tolerate this for years. Some fail in months. There is no way to know in advance, and if you are running an expensive corded tool this way you are gambling with it. In Europe, the UK, Australia, India and most of Asia at 220โ240V, a Japanese tool plugged in directly is destroyed immediately.
Step-down transformers, and how to size one
The fix for corded tools is a step-down transformer. Buying one correctly requires two decisions.
First, capacity. Power tools with universal motors draw an inrush current at startup several times their running current โ a tool rated at 700W may momentarily pull two or three times that as the motor spins up. A transformer sized exactly to the tool’s nameplate rating will sag on startup or trip. Size for at least twice the tool’s rated wattage, and three times is not excessive for anything with a large motor. A 1,500W transformer for a 700W tool is the right order of magnitude.
Second, type. Buy a genuine transformer, not a small “travel converter”. Travel converters are usually solid-state devices that chop the waveform, and they are designed for resistive loads such as hairdryers. Feeding a chopped waveform to a motor produces heat, noise and eventually failure. A real step-down transformer is a heavy iron-cored device, it will weigh several kilograms, and it will cost more than the flimsy alternative. That weight is the product working correctly.
Frequency is the part you cannot fix with a transformer โ a transformer changes voltage, not frequency. For universal motors (nearly all handheld power tools) frequency is irrelevant. For induction motors (some bench tools, table saws, compressors) a 50Hz motor run at 60Hz turns 20% faster and vice versa, which changes cutting speeds and can overload the motor. Check the motor type on anything large before importing it.
Why cordless sidesteps most of this
Here is the good news, and it is why this article is mostly about cordless tools. The tool itself has no mains voltage problem. A Makita DTD173 runs off an 18V battery, and 18V is 18V in every country on earth. The tool does not know or care what the mains supply is. The only mains-connected device in the system is the charger.
That reduces the whole importing problem to a single question: what is the charger rated for? And the answer is that you have three good options. You can buy the tool as a bare tool (Makita “Z” suffix, HiKOKI equivalents) and use a charger bought locally on your own mains โ the batteries and chargers are the same product in every market for a given platform. You can buy a local charger separately, which usually costs less than a transformer. Or you can check the specific charger’s input rating: some chargers are genuinely multi-voltage and marked 100โ240V on the label, in which case they need only a plug adapter.
Read the charger label, not the marketing copy. The input rating is printed on the underside of every charger in the world, and it will say either something like “AC 100V 50/60Hz” (Japan-only) or “AC 100โ240V 50/60Hz” (universal). This takes five seconds and settles the question definitively.
Warranty validity abroad
Power tool warranties are administered regionally. Makita U.S.A. offers a limited warranty on tools sold through its own channel; Makita’s other national organisations do likewise for theirs. A tool bought in Japan and shipped to you was not sold through your regional distributor, and the standard position across all these manufacturers is that the regional warranty does not travel with a grey-import tool.
What this means in practice is less dramatic than it sounds, because Japanese tools do not often fail inside the warranty window. But you should price the risk.
