Moving out, replacing a bed, or doing ōsōji (the year-end clean)? In Tokyo you cannot leave a sofa or a bicycle out with the normal trash. Each of the 23 special wards runs its own bulky-trash (粗大ごみ, sodai gomi) service, with its own booking centre, fees and holiday schedule.

We checked all 23 wards’ official pages and put the numbers you need in one place: phone numbers, online booking links, fees for the most common items, self drop-off sites, and the New Year booking pause.

📌 What you will learn

In a hurry? In Tokyo’s 23 wards, anything roughly over 30 cm (sofas, beds, bicycles, futons) is bulky trash (粗大ごみ). You must book collection with your own ward, buy A (¥200) or B (¥300) fee stickers at a convenience store, and put the item out on the morning of collection. Fees and booking centres differ by ward, and booking closes over New Year, so book early.

How bulky trash works in Tokyo

  1. Check that it is bulky trash. As a rule, household items whose longest side is over about 30 cm. Taking an item apart does not change this.
  2. Book with your ward by phone or online. You get a receipt number (受付番号), a collection date and the fee.
  3. Buy fee stickers (有料粗大ごみ処理券) at a convenience store or supermarket showing the sign. All 23 wards use A券 ¥200 and B券 ¥300, but stickers only work in the ward that sold them. Some wards also accept online card payment for web bookings.
  4. Write your receipt number or name on the sticker and attach it to the item.
  5. Put it out at the agreed place by the time you are given, usually 8:00 on the collection morning.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Putting an item out without booking or without enough stickers: it will not be collected
  • Using another ward’s stickers: they are not valid across wards
  • Putting out a TV, fridge, washer or air conditioner: these are never bulky trash (see below)
  • Booking too late in December: collection slots fill up and booking pauses over New Year

Booking phone numbers and websites (all 23 wards)

Most booking websites are open 24 hours (except maintenance). Phone lines are usually open Monday to Saturday during the day; a few wards also take Sunday calls. If you are not confident on the phone, the website is easier, and some sites have an English option.

※ Fees per item, tax included, from each ward’s official fee list or official booking site (October 2026). Bed prices exclude the mattress, which is a separate item. Nerima publishes fees only on its booking site (sodai-nerima.jp), which we could not check.

Self drop-off: cheaper or free in some wards

In some wards you can take the item yourself to a drop-off site, usually on fixed days and only with a booking. It is often cheaper than collection — and free in Adachi. Bring ID; most sites accept residents only.

  • Minato: Sundays 9:00–16:00 at 芝浦清掃作業所 (港南3-1-18). ¥400 items are free and a ¥2,300 sofa is ¥1,100.
  • Shinagawa: Sundays 9:00–16:00 at 品川区資源化センター (八潮1-4-1). Cheaper than collection; the applicant must come in person.
  • Ota: the 京浜島 site (address given when you book by phone), Mon–Sat 13:00–16:00 and Sun 9:00–12:00 / 13:00–16:00. Free or reduced fees.
  • Setagaya: 船橋粗大ごみ中継所 (船橋7-21-15) on the Saturday or Sunday assigned when you book. About half price.
  • Suginami: Sundays 9:00–16:00, booking by phone or fax only. ¥400 per item, up to 5 items.
  • Kita: 浮間清掃事業所 (浮間5-13-1), Mon–Sat 9:00–11:00 and 13:00–15:00. About half price.
  • Itabashi: 西台粗大ごみセンター (西台2-39-11), weekdays 13:00–16:00, weekends and holidays 9:00–16:00. Half price.
  • Nerima: 練馬区資源循環センター (谷原1-2-20), 9:00–11:00 and 14:00–16:00 on your booked date.
  • Adachi (free): 白井運輸 (鹿浜3-28-7), daily 9:00–16:00, or 新井商店 (北加平町8-26), weekends and holidays 9:00–16:00.
  • Katsushika: 東水元 (東水元4-5-6) or 奥戸 (奥戸3-23-28) drop-off stations, 8:00–16:00. About half price; ¥300 items are free.
  • Edogawa: 北部 (篠崎町2-62-17) or 南部 (西葛西1-10-16) drop-off sites, daily 9:00–15:30. From bookings made on or after 1 October 2026, items that used to be free cost ¥200.

Chuo and Meguro say they do not accept drop-offs. Taito only takes some small household appliances at a separate counter. For the other wards, the official pages we checked do not mention a drop-off service.

New Year booking pause 2026–27

Bulky-trash booking and collection stop over the New Year holidays. As of 28 October 2026, only Toshima had published its 2026–27 dates: phone booking closes at 19:00 on 28 December 2026 and reopens at 8:00 on 4 January 2027 (online booking and chat stay open). Itabashi says it will announce details in early November.

Last season gives a good idea of what to expect:

  • Chuo and Edogawa: phone booking until 19:00 on 27 December 2025, back on 5 January 2026 (online stayed open)
  • Minato: phone closed 27 December 19:00 to 5 January; online closed 30 December to 2 January
  • Bunkyo: phone, website and chatbot closed from 28 December to 4 January
  • Shinjuku: phone closed 28 December to 4 January
  • Many wards (Chiyoda, Taito, Shinagawa, Meguro, Setagaya, Suginami and others) simply list 29 December to 3 January as closed

👍 Our advice

  • Book in November or early December: December collection slots fill up first
  • Check your ward’s New Year notice in November–December
  • Collection days in late December can be weeks away, so plan backwards from your move-out date

What bulky trash does not include

TVs, fridges and freezers, washing machines and clothes dryers, and air conditioners are covered by the Home Appliance Recycling Law (家電リサイクル法). Wards do not collect them as bulky trash. You pay a recycling fee (for example ¥2,970 for a large flat TV or ¥4,730 for a fridge over 170 L from major makers) plus a collection fee. Ask the shop that sells you the replacement, or in the 23 wards use the 家電リサイクル受付センター (0570-087200 or kaden23rc.jp). Its phone booking stops at 17:00 on 28 December 2026 and restarts at 9:00 on 4 January 2027.

Personal computers are also not bulky trash; they are collected by the maker’s recycling service. Our Ōsōji 2026 guide explains appliance recycling and safe year-end cleaning in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to throw away a sofa in Tokyo?

It depends on the ward and the size. A 2–3 seat sofa is ¥2,300 in most wards, but ¥1,200 in Adachi, ¥1,300 in Chuo, ¥1,600 in Chiyoda and ¥1,700 in Shinagawa (October 2026). Some wards charge less if you take it to a drop-off site yourself.

Can I use stickers from another ward?

No. Fee stickers only work in the ward that issued them. Buy them in your own ward after booking.

Can I book in English?

Some booking websites, such as Setagaya’s, have an English option. Otherwise, the online form is usually easier than the phone; ask a Japanese-speaking friend or your landlord if you get stuck.

When does bulky-trash booking stop for New Year 2026–27?

Toshima’s phone booking closes at 19:00 on 28 December 2026 and reopens on 4 January 2027. Most other wards had not published their dates as of 28 October 2026; last season they closed around 27–29 December and reopened around 4–5 January.

Is a futon bulky trash?

In the 23 wards, a futon is usually bulky trash, at ¥200–¥400 depending on the ward. Some wards accept it free at a drop-off site.

The short version

In Tokyo’s 23 wards, book bulky-trash collection with your own ward (phone or web), buy A (¥200) or B (¥300) stickers in that ward, and put the item out on the morning you are given. A sofa is usually around ¥2,300 and a single bed frame ¥1,300, but some wards are cheaper, and several have cheaper or free drop-off sites. Book early in December, because booking pauses over New Year — and remember that TVs, fridges, washers and air conditioners go through appliance recycling instead.
